Once again, the Middle East is in a state of turmoil. In light of the recent Syria and Russia resolution and the recent vote in Israel for the annexation of the east Jerusalem, we have got to pause for a moment and ask, what does this mean? How are we interpreting this and how do we think about it?
One thing is for sure, after the vote, Trump immediately released a series of tweets saying that, “We cannot let Israel be treated this way”.
This tweet was ironic, because the UN resolution was directed specifically at Israel and only Israel. Now Trump’s sudden concern for Israel is akin to having concern for one of the victims of the resolution.
Israel is primarily a direct concern to Trump, because it is a nation that pays for Trump’s commercial hotel complexes in the US. Trump is making money off the back of the Arabs, but he is not putting money into their countries.
We must be careful not to read too much into Trump’s tweets, because we do not know what this tweet means. We can only read them as Trump is stoking the fires.
Another thing is, by releasing a tweet that ‘we cannot let Israel be treated this way’, Trump has just shown what he really thinks of the resolution.
